Well, as most were aware, the Bluegrass was short on speed, seemingly setting the race up for a frontrunner such as WILD SHOT or IRAP to benefit. Thing is, neither seemed up to the challenge of winning based on their form.
But IRAP proved up to beating the likes of PRACTICAL JOKE and MCCRAKEN, gamely turning back PRACTICAL JOKE in the stretch after that one seemed to have dead aim on him. A winner by three quarters of a length, he paid $64.60, and completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.39
Suffice to say, this doesn't make the Kentucky Derby any clearer.
MCCRAKEN and fourth-place TAPWRIT certainly had excuses, having to try to rally from off the pace considering the slow splits. And MCCRAKEN got hemmed in.
As for PRACTICAL JOKE, he was pulled away from the rest of the pack in the stretch, but again, seemed to just lack that final oomph in the closing eighth.
