Gormley won the third graded stakes of his career, and second Grade 1, in Saturday's $1 million Santa Anita Derby.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, 6-1 Gormley edged 7-1 Battle of Midway by a half-length, running 1 1-8 miles in 1:51.16. Royal Mo (11-1) finished third, beaten a length. Royal Mo was ridden by Gary Stevens, who lost his whip in the final sixteenth, according to track stewards.
Reach the World finished fourth followed by Iliad, Kimbear, Term of Art, Irish Freedom, Milton Freewater, Midnight Pleasure, So Conflated, American Anthem and Comma Sister.
Battle of Midway was part of a speed duel with American Anthem and Royal Mo through early fractions of 22.66 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.55 for a half-mile.
Gormley and Royal Mo are owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and trained by John Shirreffs. Battle of Midway is owned by Fox Hill Farms and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.
Gormley has won 4 of 6 starts and earned $920,000. By Malibu Moon, Gormley won the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes last October and was seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November.
This year, Gormley won the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at a mile on Jan. 7 and was fourth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 11.
