Empress of Lov led throughout Friday's second race for 2-year-old California-bred maiden fillies to win her second start in a manner that suggested she will have a say in the outcome of stakes at Del Mar this summer.
Ridden by Tyler Baze, Empress of Lov ($6.60) set fractions of 22.36 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.37 for a half-mile, easily beating 9-5 favorite Spiced Perfection by 3 1-4 lengths. Empress of Lov ran five furlongs in 59.27 seconds.
Empress of Lov, by Empire Way, is owned by a partnership that includes breeder Terry Lovingier and is trained by Gary Sherlock. The filly was a troubled second in her debut on May 18, hopping at the start before racing wide in a maiden race at 4 1-2 furlongs.
There are two $100,000 stakes for California-bred fillies at Del Mar likely to be considered for Empress of Lov - the CTBA Stakes at 5 1-2 furlongs on Aug. 2 and the Generous Portion Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 30.
