West Coast Bias (3) will have her California debut in Thursday's third race for maiden fillies and mares on turf, the fifth start for the 4-year-old filly.
West Coast Bias runs on a Thursday a day after the passing of Leonard Lavin, who bred the filly in the name of his family's Glen Hill Farm.
Lavin died at his home in Chicago on Wednesday at the age of 97. He had a passion for racing that stretched back to the 1950s and included such notable runners as Convenience, Marketing Mix and One Dreamer, to name only a few. One Dreamer won the 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs. Glen Hill's Chiropractor won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar in 2015.
In recent years, Glen Hill Farm has had runners throughout the United States with Tom Proctor, who trains West Coast Bias. Lavin was a frequent visitor to Del Mar races each summer until a few years ago.
His grandson - Craig Bernick - is the president and chief executive of Glen Hill Farm.
West Coast Bias, by Unbridled's Song, was third in her debut and second in her three most recent starts. She is the 5-2 favorite on the morning-line in a field of seven.
