Sam Houston Race Park in Houston has escaped significant damage in the flooding aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and is accepting displaced horses for stabling, the track’s president, Andrea Young, said on Tuesday.
“We were very fortunate,” she said.
There is not yet a timetable for resuming simulcasting at Sam Houston, which does not have a live meet until January.
“We’ve been closed [for simulcasting] since Sunday,” Young said. “It’s very dangerous to be on the road right now. It’s still raining. We don’t have a timetable for [reopening for simulcasting] right now.”
Young characterized the damage to the track facilities as “fairly minor,” and said some of the track’s “great staff” rode out the storm at Sam Houston. Right now, she said, the objective is simply helping those in need during the catastrophic flooding in Houston.
“We’re doing what we can for our citizens, and our employees,” Young said. “We had a lot of employees that have been impacted. Some have had to be taken by boat out of their homes. So, our primary focus is taking care of each other right now.”
Young said about 85 displaced horses were scheduled to be brought onto the backstretch Tuesday, bringing the total number horses on the grounds to about 100.
