Three horses and their riders went down in Belmont’s first race but remarkably there were no serious injuries incurred by horse or human.
Jockey Eric Cancel suffered superficial cuts to his hands and had some general soreness in his legs and was taken off his remaining three mounts on Friday’s card by First Aid personnel. But fellow riders Angel Arroyo and Luis Saez were both cleared to ride their remaining mounts.
The problems began on the backstretch when Fastlanefrontman appeared to get rank and lose his action while running off under Cancel. He may have clipped heels with Midnight Mike, which caused him to stumble and fall.
There You Go, under Angel Arroyo, couldn’t avoid the fallen Fastlanefrontman and fell over him, unseating Arroyo.
Later in the race, Saez was unseated in deep stretch when Archival, under Nik Juarez, cut over in front of Saez and his mount Shoot the Gap, forcing him to fall.
Archival finished first but was disqualified to last.
All three horses appeared to come back uninjured.
Cancel had two remaining mounts on the card. In race 5, Dylan Davis picked up the mount on Feed Me Carats. In race 9, Angel Arroyo picked up the mount on Ava Rae.
