Divining Rod, Tom's Ready not targeting Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Divining Rod and Tom's Ready, who finished a respective second and third in the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park, are not targeting the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, according to their trainers, Arnaud Delacour and Dallas Stewart. Sharp Azteca, who won the Kelso, is considered a leading candidate for the Dirt Mile, a Grade 1, $1 million race Nov. 3 at Del Mar.

Last year the Kelso proved to be the key race for the Dirt Mile. Tamarkuz won the Breeders' Cup event following his runner-up finish in the Kelso, a one-turn mile. Last year's Dirt Mile was a two-turn race at Santa Anita and it will be the same configuration at Del Mar.

Delacour said Monday that Divining Rod is being pointed for the Cigar Mile, a race in which he finished second by a head in 2016. He had entertained the thought of the Breeders' Cup, but said he feels Divining Rod is at his best at a one-turn mile configuration.

Tom's Ready ran fifth in last year's Dirt Mile after winning the Grade 3 Ack Ack at Churchill Downs, but he is not being pointed for this year's Dirt Mile, Stewart said Monday.

Bird Song, the Grade 2 Alysheba winner who also ran in the Kelso, will not go to the Dirt Mile, trainer Ian Wilkes said Monday.
