Justify's mile-and-a-half quest to become American racing's 13th Triple Crown winner will begin from the rail in Saturday's Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.
The unbeaten colt was installed as the 4-5 morning line favorite against nine challengers for the classic when post positions were drawn Tuesday evening at Citi Field. Trainer Bob Baffert, seeking to saddle his second Triple Crown winner after American Pharoah ended the 37-year drought three years ago, was to throw out the ceremonial first pitch later in the evening as the New York Mets hosted the Baltimore Orioles.
A little less than three weeks ago in Baltimore, Justify and jockey Mike Smith held off Bravazo by half a length in the Preakness Stakes to move to the threshold of racing history. The chestnut son of Scat Daddy is unbeaten in five career starts, also including his 2 1/2-length victory in the Kentucky Derby on May 5, in which he became the first horse to win the race without starting as a juvenile since Apollo in 1882.
The Belmont Stakes, and Justify's bid for the Triple Crown, anchors a blockbuster card at Belmont Park that includes nine other stakes, including the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes, Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes, Grade 1 Acorn Stakes, and Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes. First post on Satursday is 11:35 a.m., with post time for the Belmont set at 6:46 p.m.
