Over the last few weeks, several jockeys have been fined and/or suspended for careless riding infractions, mostly at Saratoga:
Here’s a rundown:
Irad Ortiz Jr.: Saratoga’s leading rider will miss the first three days of the Belmont Park fall meet (Sept. 7 thru 9) for careless riding during the ninth race here on Aug. 22. Ortiz was aboard Call Provision in the John’s Call Stakes. He finished second, but was disqualified to fourth for interfering with fourth-place finisher Patterson Cross.
Luis Saez: He will miss five days of the Belmont fall meet (Sept. 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20) for failing to maintain a straight course in the first race at Belmont on May 10.
Jose Lezcano: He will miss the first five days of the Belmont Park fall meet (Sept. 7,8,9, 14 and 15) for careless riding aboard Virtual Machine in the eighth race at Saratoga on July 27.
David Cohen: He was fined $2,000 for careless riding aboard A.I. Initiative in the 13th race on Travers Day. He allowed his horse to cut off another horse in the stretch, but after an inquiry and objection in that race, there was no change to the order of finish.
Dylan Davis: He was fined $2,000 for careless riding in the sixth race on Aug. 26 when he allowed his mount, Dr. Edgar, to drift out and bother another horse. Dr. Edgar was disqualified from first and placed second.
Javier Castellano: He was fined $2,0000 for careless riding during the running of the 3rd race on Aug. 15. That’s when Castellano’s No Need to Appeal bumped with the eventual fourth-place finisher Pacific Gale, but no action was taken by the stewards after an inquiry.
Manny Franco: He was fined a total of $2,500, $2,000 for a bumping incident in the 7th race on Aug. 29 that did not result in a change in the order of finish and $500 for misuse of the whip during the fifth race on Aug. 30.
Junior Alvarado: Is facing a five-day suspenion for carless riding when he allowed his mount It Justhitthe Wire to come in and interfere with two rivals. He was disqualified from first and placed third. Alvarado is currently appealing this suspension.
