Del Mar preview: closing day Monday

Handicapping opinions, closing day at Del Mar …

Race 1 – Front-runner Offshore Affair (5) and closer Feeling Strong (6) top this small-field, no-value sprint for Cal-bred maiden 2yos. Both finished second last out. Side note: Sneaking Out earned an 85 Beyer winning a similar maiden race for Cal-bred 2yo fillies by more than 10 lengths on Sunday.

Race 4 – Based on an impressive debut victory at a mile on turf, Summering (6) will be tough in the $100k Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf. However, two longshots lurk. Hyde Park Corner (5) made a premature move finishing second in her U.S. debut; Lady Prancealot (4) trained well for her U.S. debut. Hyde Park Corner and Lady Prancealot both are 12-1.

Race 5 – Miss Sunset (4) reportedly has not worked that great for her comeback as the 7-5 favorite in this filly-mare sprint stakes. Might be a good spot for Cal-bred stakes winner Show It N Moe It (5) to upset. The in-form filly is listed at a generous 4-1.

Race 7 – He won his only route by more than six, is lightly raced and trained super for his comeback. Major Cabbie (1) is solid in this N1X dirt route. His 4-1 odds could hold up because his figures are lower than favorites Flagstaff (7) and Show Me Da Lute (8). Major Cabbie is named for the late Marine fighter pilot Taj Sareen, chronicled by Daily Racing Form’s Jay Hovdey in this recommended story: https://bit.ly/2wHtoRW.

Race 8 – Two-year-old maiden fillies at a mile on turf, led by Colonial Creed (5). She finished second to race-4 favorite Summering first time out, and worked big since.

Race 9 – Roadster (3) and Game Winner (7) both won impressively first out, either could give trainer Bob Baffert his 14th win in the Del Mar Futurity. Roadster is 6-5, Game Winner is 4-1. Roadster perhaps is the more likely winner, but Game Winner at 4-1 would be too good to pass. His winning debut was outstanding.

Race 10 – A rider switch to Flavien Prat suggests new tactics might be employed on The Hunted (7) in this Cal-bred maiden turf mile. The Hunted, who improved since he was gelded, faded on the lead both recent starts. This race is a good spot to take back, and finish. The Hunted is listed at 6-1. Good enough.

Key plays: longshots Hyde Park Corner and Lady Prancealot with favorite Summering in race 4; Major Cabbie, race 7; Game Winner, race 9; The Hunted, race 10.

First post Monday at Del Mar is 2 p.m.

First post Thursday at Los Alamitos is 1 p.m.
