Santa Anita Friday: sun before the storm

The sun was out Friday morning and the Santa Anita main track (“fast”) was open for training, following Thursday’s storm. (Late change: Friday surface labelled "good" per racing office). A second storm arrives later tonight, but conditions are ideal early Friday. As of 9 a.m., four turf races remain on turf. Stay tuned for possible changes (late announcement: race 9 off turf). Friday preview …

Race 1 – This $32k claiming mile is scheduled for turf, which took a lot of water on Thursday. If the race stays on grass, expect plenty of “give.” The favorite is dropper Tammy’s Window (6), whose last start on wet turf was a blowout win by nearly four lengths.

Race 2 – The “sloppy” track Thursday was kind to speed, which is not always the case on a wet track. Anyway, the surface is “fast” on Friday, and this $8k claiming sprint looks like a showdown between sharp geldings Boy Howdy (7) and Trapalanda (6). Coin flip.

Race 3 – Scheduled for turf, this N1X mile for 3yos is topped by last-out stakes runner-up Rijeka (1), whose reputation exceeds his achievements. If this race stays on grass, no surprise if Weekly Call (2) outruns his odds as the longest shot in the field at 12-1. Each race he runs is better than the race before.

Race 5 – Entry-level fillies and mares at a mile on dirt, Queen Bee to You (6) the one to beat, wheeling back in six days. She is not reliable around two turns, nor is second choice Dulce Ride (3). This race might be more open than it appears.

Race 6 – This maiden-40 route for 3yo fillies includes the best “price play” on the card. It’s a weak field, lightly raced Had Enough K P (6) adds blinkers and has an upset shot at 6-1.  She can improve from her most-recent third-place finish.

Race 8 – Solomini (7) is favored dropping from the G1 Malibu, but second choice Kylemore (5) is sharp, recently proven around two turns, and in this handicapper's opinion the most likely winner. Not that 5-2 is a bargain. And if Super Duper Cooper (8) runs as well against N1X company as he did against N3L company, he has a shot.

Race 9 – Scheduled for the downhill course, Buckys Pick (4) is worth gambling on at 5-1 in this $35k claiming N3L turf sprint. If this race stays on turf, Buckys Pick is a play.

(Late change: race 9 off turf, will be run at six and a half on the main track, according to Santa Anita racing office text.)

Stay tuned for scratches and changes, and prepare for the Rainbow pick six mandatory payout on Saturday. First post Friday is 12:30, the price plays are Had Enough K P in race 6, and Buckys Pick (turf only) in race 9.
