Improbable, Gift Box top early morning Santa Anita workers

Improbable, wearing blinkers while drilling for a scheduled start in the Arkansas Derby, and Gift Box, in his final work for next Saturday's Santa Anita Handicap, were among the group of workers this morning at Santa Anita shortly after the 6:30 renovation break.

Improbable, with Martin Garcia up, went six furlongs in 1:12.80 in company, putting away his workmate late.

Regarding the blinkers, trainer Bob Baffert said, "Wanted to try a different deal. Trying to figure out his style."

Improbable will have one more work next weekend before heading to Oaklawn for the Arkansas Derby, which is April 13.

Gift Box has been set to go for a month, awaiting the re-scheduled Big 'Cap, which now will be run on the same day as the Santa Anita Derby and Santa Anita Oaks, four weeks after its original date. He was timed in 1:13.40 while disposing of a workmate in the final sixteenth.

"Good work. He's been ready," said his trainer, John Sadler. "Nice solid work. The track's been slow, so this was one of the better works."

There should be plenty more stakes-class horses putting in breezes later this morning, so an update to follow after the next break I'm sure.

Plus a full report will be filed at the end of the morning and posted at www.drf.com
