Mike Smith will replace Corey Lanerie on Cutting Humor in the Kentucky Derby, trainer Todd Pletcher said Friday morning.
Smith became available when Omaha Beach was scratched. Lanerie had been named on Cutting Humor at entry time.
According to Pletcher, Jack Wolf -- whose Starlight Racing owns Cutting Humor -- made the decision in consultation with Smith and Lanerie. Starlight was a partner in Justify, whom Smith rode last year to a Triple Crown sweep, and Pletcher said that was a factor in this decision.
"We feel bad about not using Corey in this spot, but this is the decision that's been made," Pletcher said.
Usually when situations like this occur the jockey who is replaced is entitled to a share of the purse equal to what the rider who replaced him earns.
