American jockey John Velazquez finished a game second in Wednesday's Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in England aboard 13-2 Kimari, but received a nine-day suspension by the stewards for use of the whip.
The dates of the suspension are July 3-11, which includes the final weekend at Belmont Park's spring-summer meeting and opening day of the lengthened Saratoga meeting.
According to a statement issued by Ascot, Velazquez was cited for "using his whip above the permitted level and in an incorrect place" with more than a furlong remaining in the five-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. Velazquez was also fined approximately $441 for the infraction.
Kimari led for much of the race, and was beaten a head after being caught in the final strides by 18-1 Raffle Prize.
The dates of the suspension were not immediately available.
