Patch, the third-place finisher in the Belmont Stakes, worked four furlongs in 49.52 seconds over the Belmont Park training track Saturday morning on what is shaping up to be a busy morning on the 3-year-old front.
Patch, with John Velazquez up, started about a length or so behind fellow 3-year-old Coal Front, tracking that one through an openign eighth in 13.24 seconds. The two were together by the quarter pole and they finished basically on even terms with Patch being asked to gallop out. He went five furlongs in 1:02.81 and six furlongs in 1:16.98.
Patch remains eligible for a first-level allowance race and is also eligible for the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga on July 28.
Coal Front, undefeated in two starts, is expected to run in next Saturday's Grade 3, $400,000 Dwyer at Belmont.
Working earlier were Timeline, undefeated winner of the Pegasus, the multiple Grade 1 winner Practical Joke, who went four furlongs together over the main track in 48.84 seconds. Timeline is pointing to the Grade 1 Haskell on July 30 while Practical Joke is supposed to run in the Dwyer.
More later as we have some bigger names on the way.
