Meadowsweet, a Smart Strike filly out of the eight-time stakes winner and millionaire Tranquility Lake, won an optional claimer at 1 1-16 miles on turf for 3-year-old fillies in Friday's third race.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Meadowsweet ($19.80) won by a nose over 1-2 favorite Pacific Wind, who had every chance to take the lead in the final furlong but failed to go clear. Meadowsweet was timed in 1:42.82.
Trained by Clifford Sise for owners and breeders Marty and Pam Wygod, Meadowsweet has won two of three starts. She beat maidens in her debut at Santa Anita on May 29 and was fourth in an optional claimer there on July 2.
Pacific Wind was third in two graded stakes in her preceding races, both at Santa Anita - the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes at a mile on May 6 and the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes at 1 1-8 miles on June 17.
Meadowsweet and Pacific Wind are candidates for the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 19.
Tranquility Lake won 11 of 27 starts and $1,662,390. She is the dam of two Grade 1 winners - Courageous Cat, who won five stakes and earned $1,165,760; and After Market, who won six stakes and earned $903,685.
