The Jackpot Hi 5 pot vaulted over the $400K plateau when nobody won it outright in the nightcap. The carryover heading into Sunday is $425K.
Ami's Mesa looked like she could be any kind after notching her first two starts, including the 2015 Glorious Song Stakes, but she went through the dreaded sophomore jinx last year. However, she won her recent comeback in a seven-furlong allowance, and then showed that she can go long when capturing Saturday's G3 Ontario Matron.
The Matron was the third of four wins on the card for jockey Luis Contreras. He went on to take ninth, a third-level optional claimer, on the quirky stakes winner Glenville Gardens, who had a perfect stalking trip.
Minks Aprise disappointed as the favorite in the Matron. After running rank on the lead, Ice Festival dug in gamely through the stretch to finish a clear second. Following a freshening, Galina Point was a creditable fifth, which should set her up nicely for the restricted Algoma Stakes here Aug. 30.
Patrick Husbands and Rafael Hernandez both doubled up.
The handle was a solid $5 million.
