Favorites took a beating the first four days at Del Mar – Pacific Wind, Mrs. McDougal, Ashleyluvssugar and Arrogate all lost at odds-on; only 8 of the 36 races (22 percent) were won by the favorite. With that in mind, on to Sunday …
Race 1 – Krissys Manicure (8) and Newport Breeze (4) both made the Daily Racing Form “horses to watch” list after creditable debuts; the 2yo fillies meet in an interesting opener. The favorite Krissys Manicure has more speed, but Newport Beach at 5-1 offers more value and should relish six furlongs. Good race in a deep juvenile filly division.
Race 3 – Vyjack (7) is the “class” of the Wickerr Stakes, but the comeback graded winner concedes a current-condition edge in the mile turf race to second favorite Perfectly Majestic (2). Blackjackcat (6) is lightly raced and getting better. Bottom line: it’s more than a one-horse race.
Race 4 – Little Juanito (6), runner-up in a highly rated maiden race three weeks ago that was his comeback, enters as the most probable winner on the card. 5-2 would be an overlay.
Race 7 – The Grade 2 San Clemente for 3yo fillies at a mile on turf has been won by shippers five of the last 15 years (Little Treasure-2002; Sweet Win-2004, Storm Mesa-2008, Wishing Gate-2013 and Istanford-2014).
Lull (3) and Enthrall (4) arrive with upset credentials for the 2017 San Clemente, facing a formidable rival in the undefeated Sircat Sally (7).
Race 8 – Prior to being gelded, Midnight Pleasure (6) was constantly distracted by fillies. His natural inclination was to reproduce. “He wanted to mount everything,” owner-trainer Mick Ruis said. Midnight Pleasure was gelded prior to his most recent start, and since then is more focused. He shortens to a dirt sprint after a schooling run last time, and is one of the appealing gambles on the card in this N1X sprint if he starts at his morning line of 4-1.
