Good racing Saturday at Del Mar. Preview …
Race 1 – Tatters to Riches (5), a Union Rags colt that is among the most highly regarded unraced 2yos in California, makes his debut with a string of sharp workouts. Trainer Jeff Mullins described the six-furlong race as a “learning experience,” but let there be no mistake. If he is as good in the afternoon as he is in the morning, Tatters to Riches will crush first out. If not, then second-time starter Jungle Warfare (6) can post the “upset.”
Race 3 – He Will (6) is favored to win the California Dreamin’ Stakes. If his 9-5 program odds hold, that will be a massive overlay in the mile and a sixteenth turf stakes for state-breds. He is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, whose other starter is G. G. Ryder (2).
Race 5 – The flashy debut winner Spectator runs next Saturday in the G2 Sorrento Stakes for 2yo fillies; three she defeated first out already returned to win (Newport Breeze, Mis Viola, Shes No Drama). There might be a fourth next-out winner if Tequila Sunrise (3) runs as expected Saturday.
Tequila Sunrise finished a better-than-looked second in the race won by Spectator; her pedigree suggests she will move up stretching to a mile and switching to turf. Tequila Sunrise was sired by Lemon Drop Kid, trained well since raced for Richard Baltas, and is a legitimate favorite at 5-2.
Encinitas (5) ran poorly at odds-on in her debut, but trainer Tom Proctor’s horses are firing this summer at Del Mar, and the sibling to stakes winner Enterprising also should move up second time out. Encinitas is 5-1, a reasonable price. Medaglia Gold (10) is worth a longshot look stretching out and moving to grass.
Race 9 – The best sprint of the season is the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, with three principals. Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Drefong (2) makes his first start of the season; sharp Ransom the Moon (4) shortens from seven furlongs to six; Roy H. (8) is fast and drawn outside.
Eight of the last 15 Bing Crosby winners were shortening in distance, an “angle” that applies to Ransom the Moon, cutting back from seven furlongs to six and listed at a tempting 7-2.
First post Saturday, the “Tatters to Riches Stakes,” is 2 p.m.
