Ransom the Moon ($10.80) won a dramatic running of Saturday's Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes for sprinters in which Drefong, the champion sprinter of 2016, unseated jockey Mike Smith shortly after the start.
Drefong ducked in when the field passed the gap when the first turn joins the backstretch. Smith fell heavily, but was rapidly on his feet. Drefong ran along the rail on the backstretch and drifted out in the stretch, seeming to hamper top contender Roy H, who was carried out into the five-path on the turn. Moe Candy was outside of Roy H and was also affected by Drefong.
The Bing Crosby was the first start of 2017 for Drefong.
Ransom the Moon ran six furlongs in 1:09.63. He finished 1 1-2 lengths in front of Roy H, who was followed by Moe Candy, Kobe's Back, Solid Wager, Denman's Call, Magic Taste and St. Joe Bay.
St. Joe Bay seemed to have the worst luck. He raced inside on the backstretch and appeared to make contact with the riderless Drefong a few times on the backstretch before fading from contention.
