Monmouth Park has caught a postcard perfect day for the 50th running of the Haskell Invitational, the annual high point of its season. Temperatures are going to top out in the low 80's, the humidity is low, and blue skies are the order of the day.
The main track is fast and the turf, which was "good" yesterday, is now firm.
There are no scratches in a very competitive running of the Haskell. Undefeated Timeline and Wood Memorial winner Irish War Cry are the race favorites, with Battle of Midway, McCraken, Practical Joke, and Girvin all sure to have their share of backers. Hence, who may be the longest price in the seven-horse field, is likely to be low double-digits in the betting.
With the 3-year-old division in chaos following Good Samaritan's upset victory over Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness winner Cloud Computing on Saturday in the Jim Dandy, the Haskell horses have an excellent opportunity to move up in the divisional rankings.
The Haskell will be televised on NBC from 5-6 p.m. The Haskell is a Win and You're In for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
In addition to Irish War Cry, owner-breeder Isabelle de Tomaso and trainer Graham Motion have three other entrants on the card. They will run Irish War Cry's half-brother Irish Strait in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes (race 7) and his half-sister Irish Defence against males in the John J. Reilly (race 8), a six-furlong stakes for New Jersey-breds. They also have Port Salerno in race 9, a first-level allowance.
The Haskell undercard also includes Miss Temple City, who Motion will test at 1 1/8 miles in the Grade 3 Matchmaker. Motion is considering a start in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, which will be run at 1 1/8 miles in November at Del Mar.
Miss Temple City will need a good effort to defeat the Chad Brown-trained Wekeela and War Flag, who is conditioned by Shug McGaughey.
In Race 3, Sharp Azteca will be a short price in the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup at 1 1/16 miles. Trainer Jorge Navarro wants to see how Sharp Azteca handles two turns in advance of the Breeder' Cup Dirt Mile.
Navarro won his second career Grade 1 at Saratoga on Saturday, when El Deal went wire to wire in the Vanderbilt. He won the Grade 1 Forego with Private Zone in 2015.
