The lone graded race of the Ellis Park meeting – the Grade 3, $100,000 Groupie Doll – is just nine days away on Aug. 13. 29 fillies and mares were nominated to the race, which was moved to a Sunday this year to avoid a conflict with the Aug. 12 Arlington Million and in an attempt to give it more national attention.
A mile race out of Ellis Park's dirt chute, the Groupie Doll could be headed by some of those that last raced in the $100,000 Mari Hulman George Stakes at Indiana Grand July 15 – a race that was won by Tiger Moth, with Mo D’Amour and Big World in second and third, respectively. All three are Groupie Doll nominations, along with Mari Human George fifth-place finisher Brooklynsway and seventh-place Ccced.
The Groupie Doll is named for the two-time Breeders’ Cup Filly And Mare Sprint and Eclipse Award winner, who won the race as a 3-year-old in 2011 when it was called the Gardenia Stakes. She also ran third in the race in 2013 in a year in which she would repeat as a Breeders’ Cup champion.
Supporting the Groupie Doll is the $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on turf, a race that could attract a large field despite its modest purse.
Entries for the Groupie Doll and all of the Aug. 13 races at Ellis Park will be drawn Thursday.
