(4) Hunters Appeal, the longest shot on the board, paid $74.30 for his win over heavily favored A. P. Zona in the $50,000 Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial. He was ridden by Sahin Civaci who picked up the mount from Jeff Burningham who was injured Friday night. It was the first stakes win at Hastings for Civaci.
The final time for the 1 1/16 miles race was 1:44.84.
The son of Successful Appeal was making his first start for trainer Jim Brown. Acting on behalf of Mohammad Khan, Brown claimed Hunters Appeal for $16,000 July 16.
The win earned Hunters Appeal a spot in the starting gate for the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby Sept. 9
