Phantom Proton (9) returns from layoff of more nine months in a maiden race for fillies and mares at 6 1-2 furlongs in Friday's sixth race.
The filly was a fast-closing second in a maiden race at six furlongs at Santa Anita last October in her only start. In that race, she broke from the rail in a field of eight. For this race, she breaks from the outside in a field of nine, which could give jockey Flavien Prat more options to stalk the pace.
Phantom Proton is trained by Neil Drysdale, who does not excel with hors returning from layoffs but has a strong record with horses having their second starts.
Phantom Proton must beat Pretty Owl (3), a deserving favorite who was second in her debut here on July 19 for trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith.
