Del Mar: Assessing the Royal Ascot race of Arawak

Arawak finished 12th in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at six furlongs on turf at Royal Ascot on June 20, a race that has not shown to be productive in nearly two months.

Arawak (7) is back in the U.S. for Saturday's Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes for 2-year-olds at 6 1-2 furlongs at Del Mar.

Of the 11 horses that finished in front of Arawak, eight of them have subsequently raced, with a combined one win in 12 starts - DeBruyne Horse won a minor stakes in Vichy, France, on Aug. 5.

Race winner Rajasinghe was third in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket on July 13, runner-up Headway was sixth in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood on Aug. 3 while third-place finisher Murillo was third in the Group 2 Railway Stakes in Ireland on July 1.

The rest of the form is mixed among the first 11 runners.

Arawak was sent to trainer Wesley Ward's base at Keeneland after the trip to England. Ward said earlier this week that Arawak had sore shins after the Coventry Stakes, but has recovered. Ward was enthused by Arawak's five-furlong workout in 59.80 seconds at Keeneland on Aug. 1.

The colt has drawn well, in post 7 in a field of 8. This will be a class test for Arawak, who seems a bit low at 4-1 on the morning-line.
