Run Away ($5) won his graded stakes debut in Saturday's Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar, confirming his status as one of the most promising males in the California 2-year-old division in advance of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 4.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Run Away was always near the front. He rallied two-wide on the turn to take the lead before the quarter-pole and drew away to win by 3 1-2 lengths over Dia de Pago. Fleetwood finished third, followed by Master Ruler, Arawak, Serengeti, Armour Plate and An Ocala Ten.
Serengeti was the 6-5 favorite. He broke at the back of the field and rushed into a stalking position before fading from contention.
Run Away ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.91.
Owned by Kaleem Shah and trained by Simon Callaghan, Run Away is unbeaten in three races. A colt by Run Away and Hide, Run Away beat maidens in his debut at 4 1-2 furlongs on May 26 and won the Santa Anita Juvenile at 5 1-2 furlongs on July 2.
Run Away was purchased for $325,000 at the Barretts March Sale of Select 2-year-olds in-training.
