Abbey Vale flopped as the 8-5 favorite in Wednesday's fifth race at 1 1-16 miles on turf, finishing a well-beaten last in a field of nine.
Jockey Flavien Prat later told steward Scott Chaney that Abbey Vale showed little enthusiasm at any stage. Abbey Vale was racing well behind the field throughout. Chaney said Prat told him Abbey Vale grabbed a hold of the bit at the quarter pole and "decided it was time to go."
By then, it did not matter. Abbey Vale finished 35 lengths behind the eighth-placed runner.
Abbey Vale was claimed for $40,000 by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. A 7-year-old gelding trained by Doug O'Neill, Abbey Vale was claimed for $62,500 at Santa Anita on July 2 and finished seventh in the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes on July 22 in his first start for O'Neill.
