First post is 3:30 for the final Friday of the Del Mar summer meet. Below is a preview of three key races: two with price potential and a turf sprint that includes the debut of a colt likely to be hammered in the betting.
Race 1 – Roosevelt (5) drops in class from special-weight to maiden-32 for trainer Simon Callaghan, who won with his last three MSW-to-MCL droppers. Roosevelt is favored at 5-2, while an 8-1 upset candidate lurks in Topgallant (1). He had a wide trip last time; his workout early this week was given a thumbs-up by workout analysts Donald Harris and Toby Turrell.
In the Daily Racing Form “Del Mar Clocker Report,” Harris and Turrell wrote this about Topgallant’s three-furlong :35.60 work: “More pace on display, and of increased importance was his appearance in the flesh and coat. Clearly a gelding heading in the right direction. Added distance should only help. RATING: B”
Race 3 – First-time starter Shaky Alibi (2) is all the rage in this turf sprint for maidens, 3-year-olds and up. Big works for trainer Carla Gaines, Rafael Bejarano has worked the colt according to the DRF Clocker Report. Shaky Alibi is listed at 5-2, that price is likely to drop. Another first-time starter Pure Pursuit (8), reportedly has speed.
Race 5 – This N1X dirt mile for fillies and mares is a good betting race. Rosie My Rosie (1) is likely to improve second start back; she is 8-1. Utana (4) made the DRF “Horses to Watch” list after a better-than-looked effort last out. She also is 8-1. Bet them both? At those prices, yes.
