Doug O'Neill is at Parx today to run Pavel in the Grade 3, $300,000 Smarty Jones and to check in on his other two runners who are stabled here, Irap and Mopotism.
Irap, the third-place finisher in the Travers, is being pointed to the Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 23. Mopotism will run the same day in the Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies.
Pavel finished fourth in the July 29 Jim Dandy while making only the second start of his career. He was beaten only a half-length for second by Giuseppe the Great and Always Dreaming. Good Samaritan won the Jim Dandy by 4 3/4 lengths.
Pavel, who will be ridden by Mario Gutierrez, was on his toes at the barn this morning. O'Neill is hoping he can work out a tracking trip behind the leaders.
Mopotism worked a half-mile this morning under Gutierrez. Officially given a time of 48.04 seconds, O'Neill caught her in 48.60, with gallop-outs of 1:02 and 1:16.
O'Neill is happy with how Irap came out of the Travers and said he will likely work the next two weekends for the Pa. Derby.
In addition to the Smarty Jones, Parx has three other stakes today, the $100,000 Donald Levine Memorial, the Grade 3, $200,000 Greenwood Cup, and the Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster. The stakes are carded as races 5-8 and will be linked by a pick four and rolling pick threes.
Wood Memorial runner-up Battalion Runner may be favored in the Smarty Jones over Pavel and West Virginia Derby winner Colonelsdarktemper.
Smile Sprint winner imperial Hint will be a heavy favorite in the six-furlong Levine. Scuba will be aiming for a repeat win in the Greenwood Cup, a 1 1/2-mile main track race. Pure Sensation, Holding Gold, and Rainbow Heir will square off in the five-furlong Turf Monster.
Temperatures are expected to peak in the lower 80's today. The main track is fast and the turf course is listed as "good."
