Fast & firm, with very few scratches on Belmont's Saturday card.
The feature is a competitive running of the Grade 2 Sands Point, for 3-year-old fillies on turf, but there is also an interesting allowance race on the grass in Race #7, featuring the return of Grade 1 winner Annals of Time.
There are cases to be made for several of the runners in the Sands Point.
Morning line favorite Uni does appear tp be the horse to beat, as she closed gamely into a fast final fraction in the Lake Placid at Saratoga last time. Her two races since arriving in Chad Brown's barn are good, but she may not have that much of an edge at a short price.
French import Vue Fantastique is a forrmer stablemate of Uni's for trainer Fabrice Chappet. She has posted her lone win so far (from seven starts) in Group 3 company, and prior to that win she was clearly second-best to the talented Sobetsu in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary. She will get lasix for the first time in her stateside debut.
La Coronel was the leader of this division earlier in the year. She was no match for some much better fillies when sent to Ascot to take a shot in the Group 1 Coronation back in June, and she was flat in her return to the states behind Uni last time. She has to rebound to her best race to win here.
Defiant Honor has made few mistakes for trainer Jimmy Toner thus far, and the one disappointing effort of her career, which came two starts back in the Lake George, is excused by an uncomfortable trip; she also reportedly displaced in that race.
Distance is a question for her, but she is talented and she rebounded nicely to win in an easier spot last time.
Annals of Time may well be too good for his competition in the 7th, but it's not as though there are no questions surrounding him at a short price. He races infrequently, he is just gettting started after a long layoff following his Grade 1 win last November, and he certainly has some bigger races on his radar going forward.
In the event he needs one on the way back, I'm willing to give Cerise's Prince one more chance for trainer Danny Gargan. He will likely have to sit in this race with the speedy Black Tide entered, but he has flashed some talent on turf, and he endured an impossible trip from off the pace as Sataroga last time.
