Legitimate favorites, potential upsets Sunday at Los Alamitos ….
Race 1 – This $12,500 claiming starter allowance might be an easy spot for favorite Bold At Night (3), Cal-bred N1X runner-up last out. But upset candidate Southern Treasure (1) had a compromising trip last out and was claimed by Mark Glatt. Only five entered the opener on a card replete with small fields.
Race 2 – Golden Atlantic (2) enters this $8k N2L claiming sprint as the most probable winner on the card, dropping from $16k N2L. He is listed at 7-5, could go lower.
Race 4 – Is the veteran Tisdale (2) a cinch in this $12.5k claiming route? Based on his sharp form, yes. Curious stat – favorites 0-for-9 this meet in routes for winners (maiden-route favorites are 3 for 7).
Race 7 – Is the veteran mare Lob City (1) a cinch in this $12,500 claiming starter at one mile? Based on her recent figures, yes. But … favorite in a route (see comment race 4).
Race 8 – Favorites have won 44 percent of sprints this meet, but a middle-odds upset candidate lurks in this N1X/optional $40k claiming sprint. Love My Bud (2) won two of three at Los Al; he shortens to a sprint after finishing fifth in a turf route. Love My Bud at 4-1 one of the better gambles on a sleepy Sunday card.
Race – He’s Knot Unusual (5) ran well enough in his debut vs. open special-weight maidens, and drops to Cal-bred special-weight for his second start. He is 5-1. That is a betting number.
