Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner The Tabulator had his major work for the race between the first two races Wednesday afternoon at Hawthorne Racecourse.
The Tabulator broke off more than five lengths behind his work-mate, Wellabled, and though he closed mildly through the homestretch never came close to drawing even with his mate, who finished about 2 ½ lengths ahead of The Tabulator. Wellabled was hand-timed in fractions of 23.80 and 47 on the way to a final clocking of 1:11.30; The Tabulator worked a couple ticks quicker. The Hawthorne main track was playing very fast early Wednesday afternoon.
The Tabulator has started his career with three wins, including stakes-victories in the Prairie Gold Juvenile, where he beat the fast 2-year-old Mister Jagermeister, and in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill, the race that punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup.
Rivelli said he worked The Tabulator between races rather in the morning in order to get the best track surface possible and to more closely simulate race conditions. The Tabulator ships to California this weekend and will have one easier work there before he races Nov. 4.
Rivelli said he’d hoped The Tabulator would break off a couple lengths closer to Wellabled, but that he didn’t expect The Tabulator to pass his 3-year-old workmate. Wellabled is coming back from a long injury layoff but showed talent last year at 2 and has gained strength and physical presence since he last raced.
“It was like a sophomore in college going against a high-schooler,” Rivelli said.
The Tabulator is a Dialed In colt owned by Carolyn Wilson.
