It was a relatively quiet Monday on the Breeder’s Cup front in New York with only three prospective starters putting in workouts at Belmont Park.
By the Moon, a top-flight contender for the Filly and Mare Sprint, worked five furlongs over the Belmont main track in 1:00.69. I caught her last quarter in 24.83 seconds as she was never being asked at any point of the move.
A short while later, Best Performance put in a purposeful five-furlong workout over main track not so much by time, but in how it was done.
Best Performance, under Joel Rosario, started two lengths behind workmate Paige and took a ton of dirt as Rosario placed Best Performance directly behind Paige, under Kendrick Carmouche. At the eighth pole, Rosario tipped just outside of Paige and bested that one by a half length at the wire, an advantage she extended to a length or so a furlong past the wire as she completed a five-furlong move in 1:01.48. Best Performance got a final quarter in 23.60 seconds.
The manner in which the work was done leads me to believe she will be pre-entered in both the Juvenile Fillies on dirt and the Juvenile Fillies Turf, the latter being the race I thought she was pointing toward. Will have more later after talking with trainer Christophe Clement.
Best Performance recorded her only win on the dirt at Belmont ion the spring and was second in both the Astoria and Grade 3 Schuylerville. In two turf races, Best Performance was second in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies and the Miss Grillo, a length back of Significant Form.
Clement’s other BC worker Monday was Pure Sensation, who went just after sunrise went over a track partially enveloped in fog. Pure Sensation emerged from the fog at the quarter pole and we had the big lumbering gray in 38.42 seconds from that point to a furlong past the wire.
Check back later at DRF.com for a full report on these works from myself and Mike Welsch.
