It was quite a scene on the Belmont training track after the 7:45 break with horses trying to beat rain expected Sunday.
Among those in the mad rush was BC Juvenile candidate Firenze Fire, who just worked a sensational five furlongs in 1:00.12 while gallopig out six furlongs in 1:13.61 and seven furlongs in 1:27.61 under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.
Firenze Fire started about five lengths behind his workmate and picked up more company as a horse from another stable broke off at the half-mile pole.
Firenze Fire cruised to the quarter pole in 24.34 and Ortiz, in upper stretch, tipped three-wide. Firenze Fire zipped past his workmate and the other horse inside the sixteenth pole and completed his work with a superb gallop-out.
As he showed in the Champagne, Firenze Fire is learning how to sit behind horses and finish very well. Bolt d'Oro will be tough to beat in the Juvenile, but Firenze Fire will certainly be among the few horses that may have a shot.
Chad Brown worked 19 horses before 7:30, including Breeders' Cup horses Practical Joke (49.68), Separationofpowers (1:02), Good Magic (1:01.91), Paulassilverlining (49.76), Voting Control (49.88), Dacita (49.35), and Carina Mia (49.36).
Disco Partner worked a half-mile in 50.79 for Christophe Clement.
Chad still has 5 more BC horses to work on the turf, including Lady Eli.
We're also expecting Diversify for a breeze that could determine whether he runs in the Classic.
