Eleven races Sunday at Santa Anita, closing day of the autumn meet. The pick six (mandatory payout) begins in race 6. Handicapping notes …
Race 1 – Turf sprints are a gold mine for longshots; the last seven winners paid $16 or higher. The N1X favorite is Caribou Club (1), first-time gelding shortening to his preferred sprint trip. His jockey Drayden Van Dyke ended a 35-race turf losing streak (So Cal) Saturday. The streak was weird; Van Dyke is one of California’s top young riders. Burning Brightly (9) is “live” in his U.S. debut for trainer Phil D’Amato, listed at an appealing 5-1. Allaboutmike (2) shortens up; he is 2-for-2 on the hill.
Race 2 – Instilled Regard (2) stretches out from two solid sprints; he is controlling speed in this route for 2-year-old maidens. Expect odds lower than 9-5 for the most probable winner on the card. Canadian Game (3) is a viable upset candidate. He improved second out, has two routes under his belt, and adds blinkers.
Race 5 – Texas Wedge (1) is the most likely winner of this starter allowance sprint for 2-year-olds. But he is favored based on a debut victory way back in July at Del Mar. Also, trainer Peter Miller has lost 12 straight with 2yo favorites. Texas Wedge was no match for Bolt d’Oro last out, but he probably will win if he runs back to his debut. Trust him? Not really.
Race 6 – The only time it makes sense anymore to play the high-takeout-single-ticket-jackpot pick six in California is mandatory payout days such as today. This maiden turf sprint is the first leg; Miller-trained comebacker Schooley (8) is listed at a temping 8-1 first start of the year. Here’s a positive Miller stat – he is 4-for-10 the past year with six-month comebackers in Santa Anita turf sprints.
Race 9 – Big field of 3-year-old fillies race a mile on turf in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss. The favorites are Lull (11) and Meadowsweet (9). For bomber consideration, check out Sandy’s Surprise (13). Her recent allowance win was highly rated; she has run well on turf. She is 20-1.
Race 10 – Marley’s Freedom (10) is the fastest in this N1X sprint for fillies and mares, but comebacker Ruby Trust (9) is “live” first start back, while Stealth Drone (5) is a five-time winner entered for the optional $40k claim tag.
Race 11 – A turf-sprint scramble for 2yo maiden fillies bred in California, and Cliff Sise-trained first-time starter Lucky At the Bay (12) is tempting at 6-1. The daughter of Lucky Pulpit is the first filly starter produced by Tamarack Bay. The mare's first seven runners are males including stakes winners Tamarando, Luckarack and U’narack.
