Trainer Rick Violette said Saturday he and owner Ralph Evans have not yet decided on whether to run Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Diversify in the Cigar Mile at Aqueduct or the Clark at Churchill Downs.
"We have not made a final decision on which race we are going to yet," Violette said. "We are leaning towards the Clark but still looking at the Cigar."
The Cigar and Clark are both Grade 1 handicaps. The $500,000 Clark is run at 1 1/8 miles. The Cigar Mile has a purse of $750,000. The Clark is Nov. 24. The Cigar is Dec. 2.
"The 1 1/8 miles might be the stronger distance for us," Violette said. "The key factors are the distance and the pace. There are pluses and minuses to both races."
Diversify went wire to wire to win the Grade 1 Jockey Club by a length over Keen Ice. In his two starts prior to that race, he won the Evan Shipman and Saginaw for New York-breds. In all, he is seven for 10 with earnings of $775,000.
