Scathing, a 4-year-old filly trained by Adam Kitchingman, will start in Thursday's eighth race and will be the first horse based at San Luis Rey Downs at the time of the terrible wildfire on Dec. 7 to compete.
Scathing (3) is the 3-1 favorite to win a starter allowance at five furlongs. In order to be allowed to run, Scathing underwent a two-stage respiratory exam.
First, Kitchingman's attending veterinarian was required to sign a statement that Scathing was fit to run and had undergone an exam that found "no evidence of respiratory inflammation."
Secondly, state veterinarians listened to the filly's breathing with a stethoscope as part of a typical pre-race examination to ensure she was fit to race earlier on Thursday.
Last Sunday, racing board equine medical director Dr. Rick Arthur published a memo urging trainers to be cautious in running horses that were at San Luis Rey Downs when the wildfire struck the training center in Bonsall, Calif. He urged trainers to wait until "after Christmas" to run those horses.
In an interview on Sunday, Kitchingman said his horses were based farthers from the fire and that many "got out prior to the disaster."
Scathing has won 4 of 21 starts. She was seventh in an alowance race for California-breds fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 10 and was claimed for $8,000 at Santa Anita on Oct. 6, the day she won a six-furlong race.
