An outstanding opening day card Tuesday at Santa Anita includes four graded stakes, three special-weight maiden races for 2-year-olds and two allowance races. Most races have big fields with upset potential. Preview …
Race 1 – Maiden 2yos on turf, Fengari (9) and Erotic (8) should relish the nine-furlong distance; both are listed at 5-1. The favorites are closing milers Big Buzz (10) and River Boyne (1). Tough race to start the meet.
Race 2 – Maiden 2yos go seven furlongs on dirt. Debut runner-up Candy Cornell (12) is the one to beat, but several have upset potential including Blame the Rider (8), Praetorian (2), Paddock Pick (1), Longden (10) and potential front-runner Goodwillambassador (7). Another deep race.
Race 3 – Can you beat odds-on Collected (6) in the G2 San Antonio? Probably not. Standout.
Race 4 – Maiden 2yo fillies sprint on the downhill turf course; Chickatini (2) and favorite Sensible Myth (10) both ran well first out and trained well since. Mapit (8) is quick. The Tapit filly is first-time turf, and expected to lead the field as far as she can. She is 15-1.
Race 5 – Many contenders in this deep allowance sprint including Well Measured (13), favorite Spectre Bond (8), Red Lightning (3) and Big Gray Rocket (4).
Race 6 – The G2 Mathis Brothers Mile, for 3yos at a mile on turf, is ripe for an upset by either B Squared (2) or Colonist (3). Favorites are Big Score (8) and Bowies Hero (5).
Races 7 – Unique Bella (3) or Paradise Woods (7) in the G1 La Brea? Five of the last six La Brea winners paid more than $20; favorites have won only 2 of the last 17. If another upset is brewing, closer Just a Little Hope (6) might be the one to deliver. She will roll late at 12-1.
Race 8 – Shippers hold the edge in the G1 Malibu. The 3-for-3 Midwest-based C Z Rocket (9) trained super this month at Santa Anita; East Coast-based Favorable Outcome is (4) a graded winner at the seven-furlong trip. He won a highly rated allowance vs. older last out. City of Light (1) is potential lone speed; Irish Freedom (3) will finish.
Race 9 – Spanish Hombre (5) is legit chalk in this mile turf allowance.
Early first post opening day, 12 noon.
