Unique Bella caught Paradise Woods in the final furlong to win the first Grade 1 race of her career in Tuesday's $300,000 La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Mike Smith, Unique Bella ($4.60) finished three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 Paradise Woods, who was followed by 15-1 Mopotism in the field of eight. Unique Bella ran seven furlongs in 1:21.49.
Princess Karen set an early lead of 22.26 seconds for the opening quarter-mile, closely followed by Paradise Woods and Unique Bella. Paradise Woods took the lead on the turn, closely tracked by Unique Bella.
Unique Bella has won 6 of 8 starts and earned $592,400. The win erased the disappointment of a seventh-place finish as the 11-10 favorite in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 4.
The La Brea was Unique Bella's fifth stakes win, all at Santa Anita since early January.
