A Sunland Park horse who was removed from the grounds Friday due to unspecified health concerns has tested negative for the equine herpesvirus, according to a state veterinarian with the New Mexico Livestock Board.
The result is good news for the New Mexico racing industry as Sunland in a past meet had experienced an outbreak of equine herpesvirus. The track opened its latest meet in December.
Sunland late Friday put out a press release announcing that a horse was removed from the grounds for "precautionary" measures because he "spiked a temperature" and that the barn he came out of was put on lockdown.
The state vet from the New Mexico Livestock Board said the organization had to wait on test results until after the New Year's Day holiday, with those results coming through today, Tuesday.
UPDATE: Sunland officials announced late Tuesday that in light of the negative test there were no longer restrictions on the barn that was on lockdown. In addition, the horse in question was released from quarantine.
