Frank Mirahmadi, a longtime track announcer, will give the eulogy during Monday's funeral service for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, according to ceremony details provided by family friend Chris Kotulak. The service will start at 2 p.m., Central at Horner Hall, which is located within the Hot Springs, Ark., Convention Center.
Van Berg had wintered the past several seasons at Oaklawn, which is located in Hot Springs, Ark. He died Dec. 27.
The funeral service will open with a prayer from Oaklawn-based chaplain Rich Heffington and will be followed by Sally Simpson singing "Amazing Grace."
Mirahmadi will then give the eulogy. A special tribute from Nancy Holthus and Chris Kotulak will follow, with family and more friends then sharing memories of Van Berg. The service will also feature a slideshow and closing prayer. The pallbearers will include Frank Lyons, Brian Lynch, Appolos Coleman, Joe Petalino, Sammy Almarez and Billy Gowan, according to Kotulak, who is among the honorary pallbearers.
Friends said Van Berg asked that his services be on a dark day - when there was no racing - and after morning training but before afternoon feedtime. It's the schedule by which he lived his life as a trainer.
