Noteworthy happenings at Santa Anita include a $13,554 Super High Five carryover in the first race Friday, and a quote this week from Santa Anita official Tim Ritvo regarding the pick six single-ticket jackpot scheme that raises effective takeout rate to 35 percent.
In a Daily Racing Form story written by Steve Andersen, Ritvo said the single-ticket jackpot format could be eliminated. “I would consider it,” Ritvo said.
Things are looking up at Santa Anita. Friday preview …
Race 1 – All seven entrants must run for the Super High Five to be offered, otherwise the next available race for the carryover is race 3. SHF wagering requires seven or more starters. Based on previous last-race-to-first-race SHF carryovers, more money will be returned to winning bettors than is actually wagered on Friday.
Last-out maiden winner Conqueror (1) is a legit favorite, with a closing style that suits the lively pace scenario. The 12-1 longshot contender Pashito (3) returns for a hot stable. He also is a late-runner.
The sample SHF strategy outlined below “keys” Conqueror to win, requires longshot Pashito to finish second or third, with Quality Line (2), Mr. Twinery (4) and Caray (5) finishing two-four or three-four.
1 / 3 / 2, 4, 5 / 2, 4, 5 / “all” = $24
1 / 2, 4, 5 / 3 / 2, 4, 5 / "all" = $24
It's a $48 play.
Race 3 – Ms. Bad Behavior (8) is listed at 7-2 in this N1X turf sprint. That price is appealing on a comeback filly with a turf pedigree. Ms. Bad Behavior is the “best bet” on the card. Even if her odds drop to 5-2, she is worth a bet. Program favorite Out of The Flames (2) is listed at a surprisingly low 6-5. No thanks.
Race 5 – Santa Anita is carding cheaper grass races. This turf mile is a $40,000 maiden-claiming race. Dr. Ann (4) is the top-choice favorite dropping from special-weight. She is no sure thing; her trainer Doug O’Neill is 2-for-34.
Race 6 – Maiden 3-year-olds run long; Regulate (8) is the one to beat off his solid runner-up finish last out. It will be interesting to see how far Paddock Pick (3) can carry his speed. Ten races have been this meet at a mile on dirt, none won by the pacesetter.
Race 8 – The new bottom claiming level for turf races is $20,000 claiming. That is the level for this turf mile, a wide-open scramble in which Trifecta (5) is the tepid favorite.
