Pepe Tono, an 11-1 chance making his first start around two turns, rallied wide through the stretch to record an upset win in Friday's sixth race, a maiden race for 3-year-olds at a mile.
Pepe Tono was timed in 1:39.55 and was ridden by apprentice jockey Evin Roman for trainer Victor Garcia. Juan Garcia, Victor's father and a retired trainer, owns Pepe Tono.
Aquila, a 40-1 chance, finished second. The disappointment in the field of eight was Regulate, the 6-5 favorite. Regulate raced wide on the backstretch and was under urging from jockey Joe Talamo in the stretch before fading from contention to finish sixth.
Pepe Tono, by Bodemeister, was sixth in his debut on Dec. 26 in a seven-furlong maiden race, closing from the back of the field. The colt was bought for $85,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
