Santa Anita Saturday preview

The brief storm that blew through Friday is gone. Saturday, the Santa Anita main track is likely to be fast, the turf condition (likely firm) will post later with scratches, changes and official track/course condition. Preview …

Race 1 – This mile turf race for Cal-bred 3yo maiden fillies includes a $12,845 carryover in the Super High Five if all seven runners start. If any scratch, the next race the SHF carryover could be offered is race 4.

Mo See Cal (6) is the one to catch. She ran well first out on turf, fourth after a slow start, then next out pressed a fast pace and tired in a dirt sprint. Back to two turns, she can be long gone for trainer Doug O’Neill, who won two races Friday.

(Late change: Princess Fran scratched from race 1, which postpones the SHF carryover. The next possible race for the SHF carryover is race 4.)

Race 2 – Bob Baffert-trained Masked (4) and Show Time Rocket (1) worked well for their debut in this 3yo special-weight sprint, but Lombo (3) has an experience edge. He pressed a hot pace and finished third last out. Route Six Six (5) worked well since a better-than-looked ninth-place debut. Masked is the program favorite for Baffert, who has won with 14 of his last 25 special-weight males that debuted as the favorite.

Race 4 – Expectations are high for comebacker Lady Mamba (1). The million-dollar War Front filly ran well two previous starts, the 9-5 favorite is training as if she will fire first start back for trainer Pete Eurton in this mile turf race for maiden fillies and mares. Lady Mamba would be a SHF “key” if the carryover applies.

Race 7 – Will favorite Bendable (2) handle turf in the G3 Las Cienegas? Trainer Richard Mandella believes she will; her female pedigree supports the move. The only graded winner in this filly-mare turf sprint, Bendable was produced by a multiple turf winner who already produced three multiple turf winners.

Bendable runs well fresh, and so does Coniah (1), a proven downhill specialist training well for her comeback. Princess Princess (4) made the Daily Racing Form “horses to watch” list off a wide-trip comeback two weeks ago. She is 15-1.

First post Saturday, 12:30.
