Two jockeys who were thrown from their mounts in the ninth race today – Juan C. Diaz and Albin Jimenez – have been transported to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital with unspecified injuries following the fourth spill in just six racing days here.
Both jockeys are reported by track officials to be conscious and ambulatory.
The spill occurred when Running Trappes, ridden by Diaz, appeared to clip heels when in tight quarters approaching the quarter-pole during the six-furlong dirt race for bottom-rung $6,250 claimers. Bluegrass Envy, the 9-5 favorite, could not avoid the spill and threw Jimenez to the ground. Neither horse suffered a serious injury.
Jimenez is the brother of apprentice Carlos Jimenez, who suffered a fractured vertebra in a spill here Thursday and is expected to be in a neck brace for at least four weeks.
Carlos Jimenez was injured in a turf-course spill in which no other horses or jockeys were involved. A spill in the final race Thursday involved three horses and jockeys, most notably Richard Mitchell, who remains hospitalized with serious facial injuries that resulted from him being stepped on by a horse.
No serious injuries resulted in a main-track spill here Monday that involved three horses and jockeys, including Jose Ortiz.
We will provide updates as available on Diaz and Albin Jimenez.
