Retirement Fund and Zing Zang breezed Tuesday morning at Oaklawn Park for trainer Steve Asmussen, going five-eighths in company in 1:02, according to the track's clockers. The horses breezed in the second set, on an overcast morning in the 40s. The track was fast.
Retirement Fund and Zing Zang were accompanied by ponies while backtracking to the eighth pole. The pair went into their work at the five-eighths pole, moving together down the backside and around the turn, with Zing Zang on the rail and Retirement Fund to his outside. The pair finished strongly, with Oaklawn clocker Taylor Radimer getting their final quarter in 23.20 seconds and galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.40.
Asmussen said both horses are being pointed for the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest Stakes on Feb. 19 at Oaklawn.
Zing Zang was fourth in the Grade 3 Lecomte on Jan. 13 at Fair Grounds, one start after winning a maiden special weight at two turns Dec. 16. He is a son of Tapit who races for Jackpot Ranch.
Retirement Fund is undefeated in two starts, winning a maiden special weight and a first-level allowance, both at two turns at Fair Grounds. He races for L and N Racing.
Asmussen said Combatant remains on deck for the Southwest. The horse was second in the Smarty Jones last month at Oaklawn.
