After yesterday's cancellation due to weather (mostly wind), Aqueduct is back in action Saturday with nine races. The feature is the $200k Busher for three-year-old fillies.
The track is currently listed as "good" and it is harrowed.
First post is 1:20 ET.
The Busher will go with a field of six after the scratches of #5 Youvegottopaytopla and #6 Blue Union Rags. They were the two longest prices on the morning line, but one was a speed and the other was a price with a chance.
War Heroine is the horse to beat in the Busher. She has won two of her three starts in Southern California for trainer Peter Miller while showing the kind of easy speed which suggests that she is simply faster than these horses early. She also owns the top two Beyer Speed Figures in the field, though she did earn one of those on turf.
Though it is doubtful that they can deny her the lead, there is some other speed in the field, and War Heroine does have to stretch out in this race. Both are worrisome for a horse at a short price, but there is no denying that War Heroine is shipping into a pretty good spot in the Busher.
My Miss Lilly looked good winning her debut in the slop here at the end of last year, and she is returning to NY after finishing a solid, if non-threatening, 3rd in the Grade 3 Forward Gal at Gulfstream last month.
Midnight Disguise has won three of her four starts for trainer Linda Rice and she has no distance questions to answer as she turns back out of a nine-furlong win in the Busanda. There is nothing special about her, and the Busanda did not look like a particularly strong race, but the distance is of no concern and she could easily improve again.
As the likely second choice in the race, it may be worth more trying to beat her than the favorite.
Sara Street has the rail for Godolphin/McLaughlin. She stepped up her game quite a bit to break her maiden second time out, and she should have no trouble getting the mile.
Race 2: Pray for Bourbon won a race for a $40k tag two starts back, and she then faded to 3rd in her first start off the claim last time. Taken at face value she would appear to be in pretty tough stepping into this 1x allowance. But she actually ran a lot better than it looks in her last race. Racing over a track that featured the strongest rail of the meet, Pray for Bourbon was bumped back to last at the start and then proceeded to take a strong wide run around the turn to challenge front-running and rail-riding Daring Prospect on the lead, and she only succumbed in the late stages. The horse that ultimately outfinished her for second, Cairenn, who also raced wide, came back to defeat 1x rivals at Laurel in her next start.
Race 3: MSW for 3yos is one to watch for future reference as it features a trio of first-time starters who could turn out to be useful. Numerical, in particular, is of interest. He is a Tapit colt out of the multiple Grade 1-winning dam Seventh Street, and he is a half-brother to the talented Marking. Marking also raced for these connections, and he won his first two career stars impressively before finishing 2nd in the Grade 1 Malibu in his third start.
