Shaymin ($6.40) won the first time in his fourth start and gave trainer Ben Cecil his first win of 2018 in Saturday's first race for 3-year-old California-bred maidens.
Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Shaymin was the second choice in a field of seven in a race originally scheduled for turf and moved to dirt because of overnight rain.
Shaymin ran a mile in 1:36.59. The track condition is noted as sloppy, but sloppy-sealed or wet-fast would also be accurate. The runners are scooting over the top of a surface that was closed Saturday morning for training.
