While some may use unpaid morning workouts to prepare for a stakes race, owner/trainer David Jacobson preferred to use a $72,000 allowance race to get Harlan Punch ready for a possible start in next Saturday's $150,000 Stymie Stakes.
Harlan Punch couldn't have won any easier than he just did, sitting patiently under Dylan Davis before rallying three-wide around the turn and galloping through the lane. He ran a mile in 1:38.10
The way Davis was looking behind him at the quarter pole and through the lane it is likely he was tyring to save something for the Stymie, which, like this race, is a one-turn mile.
Jacobson also sent out the runner-up Wake Up in Malibu.
Pioneer Spirit, the 6-5 favorite, was used up in a spee duel with Haul Anchor and backed up fourth in the five-fhorse field, passed by Papa Shot.
Order of finish: 4-5-1-3
