McKinzie and Bolt d'Oro finished a head apart in Saturday's Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, but was disqualified and placed behind his rival for making contact in the stretch.
The two made contact in early stretch and near the wire, leading to an 11-minute steward's inquiry. The stewards ruled the contact near the wire merited a disqualification.
McKinzie, the even-money favorite, ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:42.71. The race was run on a fast track in light rain.
Ridden by Mike Smith, McKinzie stalked pacesetter Lombo through early fractions of 23.50 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.81 for a half-mile. At the three-eighths pole, McKinzie drew alongside Lombo, but was quickly joined by Bolt d'Oro, who was fourth on the backstretch.
Turning into the stretch, Bolt d'Oro appeared to drift in and make contact with McKinzie. Closer to the wire, when the two were side-by-side, McKinzie drifted out and appeared to make contact with Bolt d'Oro.
The stewards cited the incident near the wire as a deciding factor in the disqualification.
Kanthaka, the winner of the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs last month, finished third, followed by Peace, Ayacara, Aquila and Lombo. Kanthaka finished 6 1-2 lengths behind Bolt d'Oro.
The $400,000 San Felipe was a key prep for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 7. McKinzie had won his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at a mile in January.
The San Felipe was Bolt d'Oro's first start since a third as the favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in November. Bolt d'Oro won two Grade 1 races last September - the Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs and the FrontRunner Stakes here at 1 1-16 miles.
